Norwich students spread gas safety message
As part of our contract with Norwich City Council, Gasway recently teamed up with Norwich students to run a competition to help spread vital gas safety messages to council tenants. As part of the competition, Grace Barrell and Ella Greenway, both 11 from Sewell Park College, created a poster which will feature on the cover of Norwich City Council’s gas safety leaflet. Judging took place at City Hall by council leader Brenda Arthur, director of regeneration and development Jerry Massey and Derrick Rust-Andrews, director of Gasway and you can see the winning entry and read more about the competition here.

Gasway and Norwich City Council team up to launch new website
Following our appointment as the principal annual gas servicing and responsive repairs contractor for Norwich City Council earlier this year, we have worked with the council to design and launch a new website for the council’s 15,500 tenants and 2,500 leaseholders.
The new website gives key information and advice on gas safety, outlines the legal responsibilities of landlords, and for the first time ever gives tenants and leaseholders a way to give customer feedback and report non-urgent heating repairs online.
Reporting repairs online saves the cost of making a phone call and means repairs can be requested easily at a convenient time.
The site also provides contact details, a frequently asked questions (FAQs) section, as well as a fun quiz. Importantly it also contains details of a special offer for 25% discounts on safety checks and boiler cover plans for leaseholders.
Members of Norwich Tenants’ CityWide Board have been closely involved with the building of the site contributing to deciding everything from the layout, colours and content. They have now given the finished product their all-important ‘tenant tick’ of approval underlining how relevant and user-friendly it is.
Barry Ellis, Gasway’s Commercial Director comments, “Gas safety is vitally important to everyone and we very pleased to be able to provide all council tenants and leaseholders with a comprehensive and user friendly website. We’re committed to providing the best service possible and this new website provides another exciting opportunity to demonstrate our excellent customer service and further strengthen the Gasway brand.”
The new website can be found at www.gasway-norwichcitycouncil.co.uk

Time to get gas wise
A nationwide effort to raise awareness about gas safety in the home is underway as part of a week-long series of events around the UK.
This marks the UK’s first ever Gas Safety Week, which runs from 12th to 18th September. The Gas Safe Register, a government approved registration scheme for gas engineers in the UK, will officially launch Gas Safety Week.
To support the campaign, Gasway has teamed up with Norwich City Council to stage a one-day gas safety awareness event for Norwich residents at Anglia Square this Friday. Derrick Rust-Andrews, Director, said: “We want residents to know about the real risks posed by gas and to help them understand the importance of taking care of their gas appliances.”
Representatives from Gasway and Norwich City Council will be at Anglia Square this Friday (16th) from 10am to 4pm to promote Gas Safety Week. At the event residents will be given the chance to:
• get gas advice and guidance from friendly qualified Gasway engineers.
• speak directly to council housing officers about gas in their council home.
• pick up Gas Safety Week freebies (including power-down devices) and leaflets
• find out how to get involved in shaping housing services for the future.
If you’d like to know more about gas safety, please come along!

Gasway teams up with Sewell Toy Library to enjoy the 2011 Lord Mayors Procession
Gasway and Sewell Toy Library staff and their families enjoyed joining in the fun of the 2011 Lord Mayor's Procession on 9th July.

Our 45 feet articulated float was decked out in a Medieval theme with castle battlements, windows designed and painted by children and a fantastic Dragon as an eye-catching centre piece! All the work to create the frame of the float was carried out by Gasway staff and Ideal Scaffolding, with the Dragon cleverly made from recycled boiler casing panels by some of our engineers. This amazing creature featured glowing eyes made from Land Rover rear light units and smoke even billowed from its mouth by means of a dry ice machine! Gasway and Sewell Toy Library volunteers dressed in period costume as kings, queens, knights, merry maidens, with the rest of the volunteers were fitted out special Gasway St George t-shirts.
We were very pleased to win third prize in the best dressed float competition, with the £150 prize being donated to the Sewell Toy Library. In total £5,568.59 was raised for this fantastic local charity. We'd like to say a big thank you to all the help from staff, friends and other businesses who made it all happen.

Gasway at the Mile Cross Community Festival
We had great fun in the sun at the Mile Cross Community Festival at Sloughbottom Park, Norwich on Saturday 2nd July. With games including splat the rat, Gasway golf, 'bag the beans' and a competition to win a gas BBQ, there was plenty to keep visitors to our stand happy. Visitors even included the Lord Mayor of Norwich and former MP Dr Ian Gibson, who joined in some of the games. This is the second year running we have supported this festival and some of our staff helped with stewarding the event which attracted over 3,500 people.

Dates announced for new community gas safety roadshows to educate City Council tenants and leaseholders
A series of events to help council tenants and leaseholders get to know their new gas contractor and educate them about the importance of gas safety will be held around Norwich over the next few days.
In April, Gasway took over as Norwich City Council’s new permanent contractors and is carrying out gas and solid fuel safety inspections, annual servicing and repairs on behalf of the council.
And tenants and leaseholders are invited to come to drop-in events all over the city to ask questions, meet the staff who will be working in their homes, and offer comments on the new contract.
“Further to being appointed as principle Gas Servicing and Heating Repairs contractor for Norwich City Council we are delighted to be hosting this series of roadshows. Gas safety is vitally important to everyone and we very much welcome and encourage all tenants and leaseholders to come and visit us. This will enable them to better understand our local business and provide some valuable input to assist us in delivering better services appropriate to their needs,” says Barry Ellis, Gasway’s Commercial Director.
Any views given at these events will be used to improve future services, help Gasway understand what kind of work they should be doing in the community and how much council tenants want to get involved.
The events will also feature the chance to take part in a gas safety workshop which will give participants the chance to learn more about their boiler, understand safety issues and get valuable advice on dealing with an emergency.
There will also be information on hand and freebies to take away.

Norwich City Council contract awarded to Gasway
We’re very pleased to announce we have been appointed as the principal annual gas servicing and responsive repairs contractor for Norwich City Council for the next 6 years.
Gasway was awarded the contract following the fulfilment of a temporary contract, via Lovell, to provide Norwich City Council’s tenants with priority, emergency boiler and central heating breakdown and installations. This contract followed the collapse of Connaught last year.
The contract, which starts on 1st April 2011, will provide gas boiler and central heating servicing and repairs for the council’s 16,000 tenants.
Commercial Director, Barry Ellis says, “We are delighted to be appointed as principal annual gas servicing and responsive repairs contractor for Norwich City Council. Our company headquarters are based in Norwich, so both our location and our expertise as gas specialists means we are well suited to supporting the needs of Norwich City Council’s tenants. In these times of budget cuts, it’s good to see the £9million contract appointed to a local contractor which ensures all the money spent stays in the local economy and benefits local people.
Mr Ellis adds, “This contract fits with our growth strategy to develop social housing services alongside our core specialist gas servicing and maintenance business, including a growing boiler cover plan insurance service for domestic and commercial customers. This is an exciting opportunity to demonstrate our excellent customer service and further strengthen the Gasway brand.”

Some 300 workers lost their jobs last autumn when Exeter-based Connaught Partnerships, which had been awarded a £17.5m a year contract by Norwich City Council, went into administration.

New brand identity
Following expansion of the business and a subsequent review of the company’s brand identity, a new logo has been created which will be used in all future company communications. The new identity has evolved from the original ‘house’ symbol, created in 1982. Research told us that the ‘house’ was recognised by many people as symbolising Gasway, so the new design is a more modern interpretation of the original, allowing our brand awareness to be maintained and improved moving forward.
Liam Betts, Managing Director, says, “We’re getting better at understanding what customers want and working as a team. And what we do is unique. It is not a unique service, but it is a unique business model, which we think will spread.”
With headquarters in Norwich, the company is now looking to establish the brand in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire and therefore establish itself as a regional brand.

Gasway wins 2010 East of England Development Agency Positive Work Life Award
Gasway have won the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) Positive Work-Life Award 2010, as we have a working environment that promotes and supports age diversity. EEDA deputy chair Sheila Childerhouse said, “Mature experienced and skilled employees are a valuable resource which can benefit both the business and the individuals within the organisation, for example through mentoring new or younger employees, which often results in a two-way learning process. It’s vitally important to have a good age mix.”
The award is one of the categories in the regional Business in the Community (BITC) Awards for Excellence 2010. |
